Dear Deer Fred

Fred the Deer loves his job cutting hair, but more than anything, he loves to dance.

That is why it is confusing to him when his friends and neighbors don’t understand how much he loves to dance in his favorite costume. We join Fred and his neighbors, Herr Hare, Bare Bear, Knight Night, and Matt the Mite for a rhyming adventure as we learn about homonyms, homophones, and homographs.

More About Dear Deer Fred

Dear Deer Fred came to life when my son was in third grade. He was learning about these words that sound the same, but are spelled differently (homophones), and these other words that are spelled the same, but said differently (homonyms). I created a story about Dear Deer Fred. I’m sure that my son just shrugged and never thought about it again.

Years later, I started teaching some reading and writing classes to second, third, and fourth grade students, I reawakened the Dear Deer poem to present to my classes.  The students get a good laugh and are eager to create their own stories with homonyms and homophones.

Now, instead of just a boring page filled with words, Fred the Dear and his neighbors have come to life in this book and the printable workbook.

This is the first of a series of rhyming books for kids.
